ASU team "vetoes" Koetter's QB decision
I know there aren't really any ASU fans on here, but the other Pac 10 guys might enjoy this. I thought it was pretty funny.

It seems like having two potential All-Americans at QB would be a good problem to have, but somehow Dirk Koetter has managed to fuck it up. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

yeah, i've been reading about that at netbuffs and allbuffs....and i think there has to be something else with Koetter backpeddling like he has.

Reading between the lines in this article...
It looks like Koetter named Keller the starter and Carpenter then went apesheet and threatened to transfer. Maybe Carpenter is a popular guy with some teammates, plus he's only a soph and definitely their future guy at QB, so if he transfers you're losing three years of him, whereas Keller is a senior.
So Koetter faces the situation, maybe gets approached by some players and the AD, and names Carpenter the starter because he's afraid Carpenter will leave ASU if he's not the starter. He lets a sophomore force the head coach's hand.
How can anyone on that team respect Koetter's difficult decisions after this? Might as well start speculating who ASU's next coach will be.

Yeah, doubt he foresaw this consequence, but this episode pretty much makes Koetter "All-In" wih respect to his ASU career (if he wasn't already, perhaps why he anguished so much over the selection?). If they succeed (which is a relatively high bar for them this year, probably Holiday Bowl minimum) he looks great, or at least he buys himself another couple of years. If they don't . . .m2 wrote:http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2555948

I've yet to hear about OU.???Believe the Heupel wrote:I'm hearing Keller is looking to transfer to the Big 12-Nebraska or Oklahoma are the ones I'm hearing-both are going to have open QB slots next year.
Nebraska yes... but OU???
According to a post on the Sun Devil Board, although I looked at some of the Phoenix Sports News sites and ESPN and found nothing to confirm, Keller has been granted his release and has has left the team.
The poster claimed it was reported on the Phoenix 5:00 news.
What a fine mess Koetter's gotten himself into.

Colorado fans have thrown themselves in the Keller mix.....he is from Grand Junction, CO and there was some gnashing of teeth when Barney missed on him. though, the CO western slope might as well be in another state (like AZ) vis a vis Denver/Boulder and the Front Range.

here's the thread. Keller's only got one year to play, seems. if he sits out this year while Taylor plays (if he doesn't get killed like last year) then he's the "guy" next year. I guess that's the reasoning.

The JUCO kid was an Elite11 qb coming out of high school but quickly left Oregon State due to grade problems. He played some JUCO ball last year with mixed results, only got to play half a year due to a thumb injury. All things considered we were very lucky to get him, especially since he is already here and getting experience for next season. But Keller is obviously more polished and ready-to-play. I'd sure take him.

Right now all parties look bad. The QB's look like aholes and Koetter looks inept.
Keller would have been better served staying and fighting the good fight. As is he either has to go division 2/3 or sit out a year. Neither of those options sound appealing. I can think of 3 guys collecting NFL paychecks who were backups in college (b johnson, m cassell and aj feely and probably a few more). I don't know if Keller was NFL material but by bailing he doesn't seem like the kind of guy you want on your team. Carpenter now has another question mark to go with his HS shenanigans. Whatever, sleep with dogs and wake up with fleas.

again, FWIW: a husker poster at netbuffs is saying Keller was at the NU admission office today.

Carpenter and Keller both seem like prima donnas. As m2 already speculated, it looks like Carpenter threw a tantrum and probably dropped a transfer threat when Keller was named the starter. The funny thing is (and I apologize for not having a link, but I can look one up if anyone wants), after Keller was originally named the starter, he didn't even refer to Carpenter by name. He referred to him as "the other guy" or "that kid." I was already thinking that was kinda fucked up before Koetter's whole about face.
Koetter was also talking out of both sides of his mouth. He said he would go with the best player, but then he said he gave the job to Keller to reward him for his loyalty to the team. If that's the case, then why even open up the job to competition in the first place? I mean, I can see his reasoning with a decision like that, but he should've made that call before spring ball. Just say, "Hey Rudy, nice job and all last season, but we're going with the senior. The job is yours to lose next year. But for now, here's your clipboard."

Keller is a pussy that is affraid of competition. He originally gave his verbal to UofM (his dad was a player under Bo) and left after UofM continued to recruit Brady Quinn and eventually got a commitment from Clayton Richard. He then backed out and went to ASU, only to turn tail and run after this fiasco.

Well, I was actually picking ASU to pull its once-a-decade Pac Ten run this year but after this, no way it happens. Koetter basically fucked everything up in one weekend.
Agree with all here-- sounds like both QBs are headcases. Remember Keller bowing to the student section at halftime of the USC game last year? Yeah, what an idiot.

Koetter is a moron. His players don't like him and his ability to make bad decisions borders on being pathological.
I agree with Killian - Keller is a pussy, and so is Koetter for letting his players do the coaching for him.
ETCU indeed.

Wasn't there a cavalcade of int's in the second-half of that USC game? Talk about karma.L45B wrote:Well, I was actually picking ASU to pull its once-a-decade Pac Ten run this year but after this, no way it happens. Koetter basically fucked everything up in one weekend.

It's a nice problem to have. What's he going to do if he doesn't get named the starter next year? Transfer? He can't now.Killian wrote:And now, Sam and Merv Keller are the Bugeaters problem.
Suddenly, NU goes from a rebuilding year with a juco that has great potential to a guy who's a proven starter and you're talking competing for Big 12 title. Under Hildebrand (our new former Elite 11 juco) next year, I was expecting a season like last one in which Zac Taylor struggled learning the system until it clicked.
While Keller and Hildebrand are new to the system one of them should be a more-than-capable starter next season. I would bet it will be Keller since he is more proven and experienced. Maybe he does have some prima-donna in him but we shouldn't see much of it unless Hildebrand rises-up and beats him, then I won't really care.

I was out drinking with a friend of mine last night who has close ties to the Sun Devil program. It turns out the rumors are true - Keller has an affinity for snow in the desert. In the offseason, at least, the guy has a cocaine problem and his teammates knew of it. This is why they led a mutiny on the coaching staff and wanted Keller gone.
I hope the kid can clean up his act - sounds like he's pretty fucked up.

HFAL, don't get all sensitive like a highschool girl. The talk about Keller's drug problem has been out there - spend five seconds and you'll find it.
My guy says it is true. Sucks for you, I guess.

I'm just saying that I next to nothing about Keller and I'm not about ready to believe what I read online from people that know a guy. I'm willing to give Keller the benefit of the doubt. BUT if the rumor is true, hopefully he sees this as a wake up and cleans up.Jimmy Medalions wrote:HFAL, don't get all sensitive like a highschool girl. I have a feeling that since he has just one year to learn the system before he plays, he'll keep his ass in line.

you gave him a schollie, i don't see how saying "ASU recruited him" acquits NU into typical moral blamelessness. what's the diff? sure, OU wanted him too. but, that's kind of a silly statement.Husker4ever wrote:My money says Keller plans to rub ASU's nose in the success he intends to have at Nebraska. I see your point but ASU saw something in him and I'm sure they didn't recruit a cokehead. I suppose him being a transfer with no priors related to this rumor should absolve Nebraska of another "you recruit thugs and losers" accusation. Just saying it would look worse had Nebraska hand-picked him out of highschool.
