This is what's crazy about this season. I think you can mix and match any of these teams in the top five, and I wouldn't have any complaints. I think just based on who they've played and beaten though, OSU has to be the default #1. Auburn, LSU, ND, and USC...you could slot them anywhere in those 2-5 spots, and I'd be okay with it.Van wrote:1-Ohio St

Mgo, yeah, #'s 2-5, good luck sorting them out at this early point in the season. I've just been more impressed by Auburn than by any of the others so far, even though they haven't played anybody noteworthy yet.
USC's only played one game and it was a decent but flawed performance on the road against a possibly good/possibly dogshit SEC team.
ND looked horrible against Georgia Tech but then they looked awesome against Penn State. I gotta believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
LSU's looked awesome twice but one game was just a home scrimmage and really so was the other.
At least the LSU-Auburn question will sort itself out this week so that'll take care of that. (I like Auburn there, something like 17-13, mostly just because it's in Jordan-Hare.)
We'll know a lot more about USC after this week too, but then again if USC just flattens Nebraska there will surely ensue a chorus of people stating that it meant nothing because it was just a dogshit Nebraska team who really couldn't offer USC much of a test. And, they might be right.
ND though, this is their season, this month. If they get through unscathed and looking impressive in September they have the #2 ranking (#3 at worst) sewed up for the rest of the season, up until their games against UCLA and USC. Until they play the L.A. schools they have clear sailing the rest of the way after the Michigan State game.
On the other hand, assuming everybody else takes care of business and runs the table, if ND should fall to either Michigan school then it strictly becomes a Solomon's choice dogfight for #2 and a date with OSU in the title game between USC (assuming they roll Nebraska) and the winner of the LSU-Auburn game.

As a USC fan then I guess I'd better root for ND the rest of the season. If both USC and ND roll into that game undefeated then it won't matter what happens with the SEC winner, they won't have a shot at bumping the winner of USC-ND. The SEC winner will be the team to get screwed in such a scenario...

I would agree with this 100%. No one really knows how good PSU is and this may be a sign for a repeat of '03-'04. I hope not but they looked fairly incompetent.Van wrote: ND looked horrible against Georgia Tech but then they looked awesome against Penn State. Have'nt seen enough of most of these teams to give full analysis. My limited thoughts are.........................
OSU with out a doubt #1
ND 2nd, no farther back than 3rd,
FSU should drop back to around 15th but they will play thier way back up.

I was thinking before the season started that our first four games out of the gate were the toughest patch we'd hit all year. I still haven't changed my mind about that.Van wrote:ND though, this is their season, this month. OTOH, there's a world of difference between the two LA schools on our schedule, both in terms of difficulty and where they fall on the schedule. USC remains a very loseable (sp?) game for us. UCLA, by contrast, belongs in the category of "live longshots." But I like our chances in that game, given that it's a home game and the schedule maker was somewhat kind, putting that game immediately after our bye week. Anywhere else in the schedule, and that's the type of sleeper game that can cost you your season. But there's no excuse not to be up for it after a bye week.
USC, coming as it does at the end of the season, could be a de facto playoff game. But UCLA is more than a month earlier, and in fact, ND only has two games -- Purdue and Stanford -- between Michigan State and UCLA.
If you're looking for a sleeper team on our schedule that frightens me, Air Force is a good bet. They just played Tennessee very tough at Neyland, far better than most (myself included) expected. They catch us at a time which could be described as a bit of a lull on our schedule, and it's a road game, so we'll have to handle the different atmosphere in Colorado Springs. Throw in the fact that, as I mentioned before, I'm part of the only class in ND history to witness four losses to Air Force . . .
Sucks if it's your team that gets screwed, for sure. But for the rest of us who want a real playoff, those scenarios are the best hope available. Here we come...BCS Nightmare And One Truly Deserving Team Just Gets Royally Fucked, Part XII...

Well, Terry, look on the bright side. Come hell or high water ND will never be the team to get fucked by the BCS, or the networks, or whatever.
LSU? Possible. USC? They already got hosed once. Auburn? Ditto.
ND? If ND ever runs the table, they're in. No questions asked. CF wouldn't have it any other way.

Final score: SJS 35 Furds 34...

Seems like the furd is trying to lose to every local team possible.
I don't know if Sac State is close enough to qualify, but they might want to get on the furds schedule sooner rather than later.
I love Trent's, Player Bio:

The best advice I ever received was: "Never go to Cal"
He must have received a lot of very bad advice if "never go to Cal" was the best advice he has ever received.
All you need to know about him as a football player and the career he has had:
My greatest athletic moment is: "Hitting a hole in one on the fourth hole at Stanford Golf Course"
The biggest thrill in my life to date is: "Playing Cypress Point Golf Course"
The one thing about college football I would change: "Make intentional grounding legal inside the tackle box"
Check out the favorite group of Trent who doesn't like Cal...
None other than the Counting Crow's. At least he has good musical taste...
Nice favorite actress, Trent...
Dakota Fanning? what are the chances trent has some kiddie porn?

Stanford is pretty fucking pathetic this season.
Funny thing is, you still think Kal has a good team.

Pretty good advice, I'd say. When he graduates he'll have a degree from Stanford. The best advice I ever received was: "Never go to Cal"

It's too early for me to :shazpoll:.
PSU will probably be a little better than they looked last Sat. I hope for a top 20 finish.
ND will be in much tougher games against the Michigan teams.
OSU is definitely my #1 right now, of that I'm certain.
