Geddy Lee confirmed that Rush filmed their Sep. 24, 2004 R30 show "as a historical record of 'this' tour". A recent industry article, however, makes it seem that a great deal of cost and effort went into the recording for a simple "historical record":

"Brad Madix leans over an 80-input Yamaha PM1D inside the cavernous Festhalle, the centerpiece of Frankfurt’s Messe convention complex....A crew of 14 cameras is shooting footage for what will ultimately become Rush’s second DVD music video. The fact that the cameras are HD, shooting in 1080p, indicates the band and its management plan a long and profitable revenue life for this project, well into the arrival of the next generation of high-density disc formats (HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc) and the proliferating number of high-def broadcast outlets in the U.S. and elsewhere...The video shoot was financed by the band and its Canadian management company, Anthem Entertainment, and will cost several hundreds of thousands of dollars by the time post-production and 5.1 mixing are finished. Thus, it wouldn’t be surprising if the evening’s emphasis naturally tended to be on the shoot over the show. 'The video is expensive, true, and it will be around for a long time in the form of a D! I saw that on the Counterparts message board. I'd rather them release some older videos on DVD such as A Show of Hands.

There is also rumor that they boys will be heading back into the studio shortly.

Absolutely. "Marathon" from ASOH is about as good as it gets.

Moth, they could also release video from Exit..Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure, etc. I only point ed out ASOH because that was the only video I had.

If they are looking into doing all of this upgraded technology, then they should go back to get other footage that they have.

GUP, HYF and Power Windows being 3 of my favorite Rush albums, it's not hard to understand why I'd lobby for an ASOH DVD.

the sonics and recording still hold up today

If you're going to define the synth era as Signals through and including Hold Your Fire, then you're going to have a hard time convincing me that Power Windows was the definitive synth era effort. If anything, it's the least definitive of those 4 CD's. Signals would top the list in my opinion.

power windows was what they were trying for after moving pictures.....

signals lacks guitar and they were adapting to mtv and gup is their most hated effort after caress of steel, in fact they almost broke up over making that record, they admittedly say it was like pulling teeth, not to mention a very close friend of theirs died which affected their mood

hyf was a power windows afterthought, notice synths dropped off significantly after that, but it would be my 2nd choice

And that was my point. Power Windows was more guitar laden. While there is some synth in there, it doesn't even come close to the levels of synth that Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Hold Your Fire have.

Grace Under Pressure was aptly titled because of all they band went through. I actually think that is a great CD. Very underrated to say the least. It's a much better effort than Presto and Roll The Bones.

I'm not trying to equate more synth to the deifinitive CD of that era. Hold Your Fire has the most, but I would rank that as the 3rd best of those 4 CD's. While I agree Power Windows uses synth on every song. Signals uses the synth more distinctively and better than any of the other 3 CDs of that era.

to me, signals will always be about turned down guitar and turned up drums

The synths are placed in a more complimentary style on Power Windows, whereas HYF, the synths drive a lot of the songs (take Mission, for example). One album isn't really more synth than the other, they were just placed in different ways.

gup is very one dimensional and robotic (on purpose perhaps) i also thought it was the weakest tour.......presto is just a flat out anomaly..........fortunately the roll the bones songs played live exceptionally well

Though many live Rush songs are better than their studio recordings, GUP is the one album that probably exemplifies this the most. I used to always think Between the Wheels was a fun song, then I heard it live and played twice as fast, and I was totally floored. The jam at the end of that song is vintage Rush. Distant Early Warning also has much more impact live than its album version.

Between The Wheels was easily the highlight of the R30 Tour. You could tell it was for the boys as well. The lighting was much grander for that song than for any other.

Afterimage is a song off of Grace Under Pressure which I wsih they would play live. Alex's solo in that song is killer.

i'll take 'the body electric', a good representation of that album

Other than Geddy's neat little tamperings on the bass in that song, The Body Electric is pretty unlistenable. Easily the worst song off GUP. Lyrically, it's just too cheesy...even for Neil Peart.

edit: mucho - I'd be happy if they played Afterimage, Kid Gloves or the Enemy Within on the next tour.

i edited out the slow break parts in 'enemy within' and put it on a dance track for a frat party back in the day, worked well

The Weapon would also work very well.

anyone here who has heard a boot from the GUP tour in 84 knows that's as good as it gets for rush. the band at its best.
