It's unanimous that UCLA is rudderless and without head coach.
On the flip side, y'all have Petey Carroll and 5-stars at every position. If you do lose a Pac-10 game - and or fall short of a top 3 finish in the nation, your season is a failure too.....correct?

Nah. This thing is going to quietly disappear with some explanation from the NCAA that Reggie's parents paid back the rent and this thing was all nothing but the doings of some bitter, shady agents...
Do you really expect it to go down any other way? The NCAA LOVES having a program like USC with a media friendly coach like Carroll at or near the top of CF. This whole thing will end up being (not much) ado about nothing...

Yeah, if the NCAA doesn't do shit about this I'm getting NFL ticket on t.v. next year. If you can't win clean...don't fucking play. USC is guilty because they recruited Bush.....they let him and his family enjoy the shit right under their noses.
The right thing to do would have been to kick Bush off the team and turn themselves in to the PAC 10 and the NCAA. But they decided a some more hardware for the shelf was worth more. Guilty. Other programs have done less and suffered for it.

The gates got off in 96 with their mulligan championship, why not USC?
in 2001 the NCAA amended their rules lessening the blame on the Universities when the wrong doing was done by an agent who was not involved with the school.
That would leave USC holding the bag if the "alleged" money was given to Reggie's family prior to 2001.... when he was in 10th grade at Helix High School in San Diego.
The FBI is investigating this matter since it seems these "Agents" have been trying to extort reggie and his family.

You can say that shit until you're blue in the face, but no one believes it is strictly limited to agents stuffing cash in the Bush family pockets. Even some of your own Mod's are starting to sweat this a bit.

To call USC "dirty" over this is just ridiculous. They initiated nothing, they participated in nothing and they gained no advantage from anything that allegedly occured.
They didn't falsify grades. They didn't provide false jobs/income. They didn't provide inducements to come to USC, or to stay at USC. In fact, the inducements, if real, were offered by those agents as a means of getting Reggie to leave USC.
As a program USC is guilty only of having their practices being too open to the public, including weasel agents. This is totally chicken shit opportunism, this gleeful rush to condemn USC now as being "dirty". There's been nothing to indicate USC runs anything but a clean program, a program that's every bit as clean as any other.

I don't mean to say USC is a "dirty" program so much as, USC getting away with looking the other way is going to encourage programs who ARE dirty to cross the line even more. USC is guilty of allowing this to happen under their noses with nary a second look. How can you in good concious say USC didn't gain anything from Bush's misgivings? I dunno...that Heisman trophy thing always has a nice ring when talking to potential players. Not to mention the advantage and gains of having Bush on the field every saturday. Also, how do you know this isn't the proverbial tip of the iceberg/where there's smoke there's fire?

If the truth comes out fully and if "justice" is done, I was told that Reggie Bush will be less welcome around Heritage Hall than OJ Simpson.
What I mean by justice is that if it all comes out and it were a UCLA or ND player who had done this and if ND or UCLA had had this success, Trojan fans would want and demand certain things. Penalties, forfeits, etc. Shoe is clearly on the other foot.
As I have said before, others in CFB and CB (Farmar and Happy Walters, look them up) have been on the take, but Reggie and family are guilty. The question is how much will they cooperate. If there are no laws broken and if they are not forced to testify by law, they won't and USC will dodge the bullet.

Several other players on the 2005 team, one for sure on the 2006 team and a few others are all involved with agents.
If the NCAA found the right smoking gun, or a talking person, could be interesting.
UCLA has their own housing gate issue in rent controlled Santa Monica, as I recall. And they too have players involved with agents. Nearly everyone does, but LA schools are prime targets. Seeds money, invested capital for the agnet. Hook the kid, invest some in them, make their life easier, snag half of who you pay and you get it all back on the first contract.

I don't, and neither do you, but I do know that USC is not being accused of having any part in the inducements allegdly given to Bush's family.
USC and Reggie didn't win his Heisman due to Reggie's parents allegedly receiving free rent from an agent looking to lure Reggie into his firm.
Reggie's participation on the field was never in question and no, USC and Pete Carroll are neither expected nor required to know how one of their player's parents are paying their rent.

Because he has no conscience when it comes to expressing his unbelievable flawed views.
In other words, he's a homer piece of shit.
Nah, having dudes flashing the bling all over campus doesn't help recruiting or anything.
And so what if Reggie was driving around in a $30,000 ride, even though he didn't have a job, and his parents were in debt. It's not like it's the university's job to keep an eye out for that sort of thing, or anything.
Unlike Mr Meds, Van doesn't believe that SC needs to play by the same rules as other programs. It's ok to look the other way, since a third party is the one violating the rules and ponying the cash, and they can fall back on the "(im)plausable-deniability" defense.
When your unemployed superstar with broke parents shows up in a new tricked out ride, it doesn't neccessarily mean that a rule was broken, right?
Van's been an absolute retard on this matter...:bigshocker:

I'm not even sure how to respond to this.
Maybe I'll get help from Cicero, since he works closer to this level of intelligence on a frequent basis.
Dear god, please tell me I didn't read this?
Yeah Van, it's cool to show up to practice in a new ride, so long as the university didn't supply it.
And you realize that if we follow your
Seriously -- when Bush is driving a reasonably-expensive looking rig to practice all of a sudden, it's not Pete's job to at least raise an eyebrow? Is this really the Road to Idiocy that you're choosing to travel? He was able to determine just by looking at the car, whether it came from an agent, a booster, or somewhere else? His parents couldn't afford to buy him a car, but they now suddenly can? C'mon...that's just not reasonable or even believable. At minimum, it's Pete's job to at least ask a few questions...he is, among others, responsible for NCAA rules enforcement, is he not? And players driving new cars has always been considered one of the tale-tell signs that something might possibly be up with the program, right?
Actually, not one homer-assed point you've attempted to make on this matter even makes any sort of sense.
Carroll knew. Period. And all of the excuse-making in the world by the homers isn't going to change this reality.
When/if somebody involved is actually accused of a crime, or at risk of severe loss, the truth will flow like wine. And it won't end well for SC.
Which is too bad, since they were perfectly capable of getting the ball rolling without playing dirty.
Van, you're just flat LYING on Carroll and SC's behalf. And you know it.

Come on Van....you telling me that Reggie is just a "super swell kid" who only accepted rent for his broke parents? Pleeease...he was a greedy little shit who liked to flash the bling and benjamins. He doesn't give two shits about USC now that he's living the life or when he was prepping for it at the expense of an entire program. And said program looked the other way full well knowing the potential consequences if said greedy little shit was found out. They get off on this and you can expect this kind of shit to explode around the nation. A message has to be sent out to protect the game.Van wrote:I don't, and neither do you, but I do know that USC is not being accused of having any part in the inducements allegdly given to Bush's family.

I have a simple solution to it. The NFL needs to step up with a lifetime ban of any college player from participating in the league if found guilty of any NCAA rules violations while in college. Let them flash the electroplated and cubic Zirconia bling they aquire in Canada. Too greedy to wait? See ya in the CFL.

BINGO!
But then I suppose guys like Carroll won't be able to claim ignorance, and say "but...but...we let a lot of people into our practices...must have been one of them."
Excellent built-in innocence-by-ignorance excuse.

I'd have no problem with such a rule, provided the NCAA gets at least somewhat realistic in the overall scheme of things.
(As an example, I see broke ass and basically unemployed kids every day who still manage to drive $30 k cars with $5k stereos. These kids also sport excessive amounts of bling. Are their parent's rich? Are they getting money from boosters? Nope. Would the NCAA still need to come down on them?)
Also, Dins, exactly where in the process is it spelled out that USC or Pete Carroll are required to make a player's parents fill out a credit application detailing their income and rent?
A coach is not required to know that shit. In Petey's 24 hour day he's not expected to be sleuthing around the financials of the parents of his players.
Also, speaking of intellectual dishonesty, you're being an absolute hypocrite if you don't acknowledge that your school and most any other school is every bit as "guilty" as USC. Then you can add the Witch Hunt Factor which is going on here, which of course you're overlooking. Finally there's the Jimma vs Van comparo you keep making, where you conveniently ignore Jimmah's constant posting of the "people in glass houses" comment...
So, basically, suck my balls.

One of the 30 guys on Carroll's staff might be of service in monitoring players, Van. Or are they issued a pair of blinders at hiring? If someone's watching a player's grades and attendance to class, they know of any sudden changes in a players' dress or lifestyle. Reggie's greedy parents said "fuck you" to the guy who started the gravy train and now Carroll got exposed. You can thank Reggie and his parents.
Holy fucking jeebuz, it continues?Van wrote: (As an example, I see broke ass and basically unemployed kids every day who still manage to drive $30 k cars with $5k stereos. No fucking way!
Let's see Van, a broke, unemployed kid with $35,000 worth of wheels under him...
Since I assume these kids you see "every day" aren't playing D1 football, why would it be the NCAA's problem?
On the other hand, if the POLICE know the kid is unemployed, and they know he comes from a less-than-wealthy family, do you think the police have at least some obligation to raise an eyebrow?
Are you really this fucking stupid? I mean, I realize you're naive with your "I don't do drugs, never drank" thing, but hmmm....poor kid suddenly shows up in $35,000 ride...gee, I wonder how that happened.
Holy fucking ignorance, Batman!
You're raising the bar on stupid-btw.

Link to where ANYONE suggested that?
No, this is about due dilligence when it comes to making sure those under your supervision are abiding by the rules. Carroll failed at at least this portion, and failed miserably(assuming these reports are even true).
A coach IS required to enforce NCAA rules, and IS required to not turn a blind eye when any reasonable person has good cause to believe those rules are being broken. What's mind-boggling, is how you don't understand this.A coach is not required to know that shit.
Nope, certainly not. He is expected, however, to inquire about any obvious rule violations he might suspect. He didn't.In Petey's 24 hour day he's not expected to be sleuthing around the financials of the parents of his players.
Also, speaking of intellectual dishonesty, you're being an absolute hypocrite if you don't acknowledge that your school and most any other school is every bit as "guilty" as USC.
U of O is just as much "my school" as USC is "your school."
But we're not talking about Oregon. We're not talking about Oklahoma. Those schools, while subject to just as much investigation as USC...they didn't get caught.
USC did.
So, you can run the "no big deal, everybody's doing it" defense all you like, but in the end, you're still a stupid fucking homer tool.
Gee, didn't see THAT coming. Really. Then you can add the Witch Hunt Factor which is going on here
Wha, they're only picking on USC because they aslmost won the championship last year...whaaaaa.....it's not SC's fault for doing it...it's the big bad meanies who want us to play by the rules. WHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
Please tell me you aren't even trying to blame wholesale rules violations by SC on the investigators, are you?
If it's a "witch hunt," I find it awfully odd that Texas hasn't been busted for anything yet, what with their "best recruiting class in CFB history" every year...not to mention, they actually won a championship last year.

There are lots of folks like me who only care about the program. If the players uphold it, we love them. If the players disregard it, they can fuck off. This issue has really parted the red sea between the Johnny-come-lately rah rah fans, and the real fans. I'll be loyal to you, so long as you're loyal to me. End of discussion.
I don't agree with the morons here that believe Carroll and company had full knowledge of any violations. Like him or not, Carroll is not the kind of guy that would sweep this under the rug. He's kicked guys off the team for prior transgressions and I seriously doubt he'd make an exception here, where the violation is far more significant and threatening to the program, and his personal life. Methinks people are overreacting if they take it to this extent.
If the program is affected by this, Reggie can go facefuck a speeding bus and I'll celebrate them pulling his Heisman.

That's certainly what I want to believe...I'm just having a hard time doing so at this point.
But culpable or not, if these allegations are true(and it's starting to look that way), at minumum, Carroll is at least guilty of a head-in-the-sand policy....which isn't a violation in and of itself, but still not in the spirit of playing by the rules.

A reaction to this situation is clearly-waranted. Unfortunately, there is a significant faction of people who have over-reacted and made assumptions prematurely. This issue is about the degree of violation, not the existence thereof. At the same time, the blind assumption some make is that USCfan thinks it's an issue of he didn't vs. it shouldn't matter. More of an all-or-nothing kind of argument, but homeresque nonetheless. They fail to see how this kind of posturing makes them look like idiots. Likewise, those who over-react also look like idiots.Van wrote:Finally there's the Jimma vs Van comparo you keep making, where you conveniently ignore Jimmah's constant posting of the "people in glass houses" comment...
I guess what I'm saying here is...all the chest pounding in the world doesn't do anything other than make you look stupid. This issue is going to sort itself out. If the NCAA finds us guilty, so be it. If they don't, so be it. None of us controls this.
What I'm also saying is that those who have over-reacted and made juvenile assumptions as to where SCfan's head is at look like the biggest idiots of all. While the "it happens everywhere" argument may be true, it doesn't make things right. Those who take the over-reaction stance while ignoring what misgivings their own program might have need to get their windows washed.
Just sayin.

For the record, this pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter.
My contention is with the outright stupidity Van is demonstrating. Rather than accountability, which is what I'm sure the NCAA is after, Van went straight to the excuse-making stage...a little premature, methinks.
On the surface, this doesn't look good for Carroll and Co. At the root, it's in limbo until the NCAA finishes their investigation. And once they do, I'm pretty freaking sure those investigators won't be laid off -- they'll have other fish to fry...kind of puts the "everybody's doing it" defense to rest.
I actually hope they prove to be false, and SC's and Carroll's good names are restored...for the record, despite Oregon being the default PAC10 champion if SC forfiets games...who wants to win anything like that...nevermind, probably the same people who enjoy winning by cheating(sup SEC Ballsucking Homers).

And that's what kinda sucks about the whole deal...at this point, the whole "insitutional control" thing becomes very subjective, and regardless how the NCAA finds, people are going to be pissed off and pointing fingers on both sides of the isle.
And if there's forfietures/suspensions -- what then? Is Carroll a goner, as a show of good faith? Will that be based upon fan/community reaction?

Dins, gotta few words for ya' that might help clear up the whole "Kids with bling who seemingly shouldn't have any...." conundrum:
"Baby momma"
"Grandparents"
"Baby momma's grandparents"
"My cuz' hooked me up"
People come in here every day with no visible means of support and still manage to get their toys. There's no reason a college athlete couldn't also manage that same kind of crap, even easier.

Dude, your plunger-addiction is getting downright disturbing.
How did we go from "dude with no job whose parents are in debt" to "people who come in my work"?
But I sincerely wish I could approach your level of naivete.
Do you REALLY want to know how ghetto kid with no job and no apparent means to afford an expensive vehicle comes up with the funding?
I mean, do you REALLY want to know?
I'd venture a guess that knowing this might cause you some misgivings-of-morality at your job...but then again, after reviewing both this thread and what you do for a living, it's abundantly clear you have no conscience, so if you want a little education on the workings of inner-city finance, just let me know.
But for now, I'll give a hint...it has to do, like most things, with "supply and demand."

Was Reggie declared a dependent by his parents?Believe the Heupel wrote:In the NCAA eligibility rules.Van wrote: Also, Dins, exactly where in the process is it spelled out that USC or Pete Carroll are required to make a player's parents fill out a credit application detailing their income and rent?
A coach is not required to know that shit. In Petey's 24 hour day he's not expected to be sleuthing around the financials of the parents of his players.
Players and parents claiming the player as a dependent are required to fill out financial statements yearly with the university. This is part of the grant-in-aid process.
Compliance guy out front shoulda told ya.
Here's the thing:
A school is supposed to have adequate controls to catch this kind of shit. It appears that USC does not have adequate controls in place. That is something that the NCAA may find EXTREMELY troubling, and it's what is meant by "Lack of Institutional Control."
