Weis is the flavor of the month for the NFL. In the late 90's Mack Brown got lots of interest from the NFL while at UNC.

Stoops has had his share, as has Firentz.

I can understand wanting to prove yourself at the highest level but I don't think Weis is made for the NFL, he seems more like a College guy. Stoops has the no nonsense demeanor for the NFL. If Brown pulled that "we are family" stuff on an NFL team he would get bitch slapped back to the college level. He coaching does not translate to the NFL.

Besides what can the NFL offer that the Irish can't?

The Irish offer great job security, prime national recruiting, and he owns the national media especially the east coast.

There is not a NFL team that can match what the Irish can offer, especially in this era of free agency where you draft a player, groom him and then he leaves for more money after 3 years.

If I were a coach at a major school like USC, ND, Texas, FSU, or tOSU I would have no desire to enter that rat race.

Just look at Weis. You can tell ego isn't high on his wall. The only thing that is gonna get Weis out of ND in the next 10 years is the Donut and French Fry Grim Reaper.

Weis' background is in the NFL, not college, so I think he could make it there if he chose to do so. Also, keep in mind that there's actually more margin for error in the NFL, from the standpoint that fans don't expect you to have a perfect season, and a perfect season is certainly not required to qualify to play for the Super Bowl.

Having said all of that, I don't think Weis will leave ND for the NFL for two reasons. First is the fact that Weis is an ND guy. He's a Notre Dame alum, the first to coach the team since the 1960's. Notre Dame commands a degree of loyalty that is all but unheard of in college football. Second is the fact that Weis seems to have something of a chip on his shoulder about the NFL. Right or wrong, he feels that he was unfairly passed over for several head coaching positions in the NFL. In fact, when he first came to ND, he spoke on several occasions about the NFL. The gist of his message always was, they had their chance to hire me, and now it's too late.

Like Frisco said, it's ego. Also, I believe the NFL generally pays better, although it doesn't have to be that way, at least not for the higher-profile programs.

I agree with everything Terry said above and would add one other factor as to why Weis won't leave for the NFL: Family. He has said on numerous occasions that he has seen his family more in one year at ND than he did in his last 5 in the NFL. His son gets to be on the sidelines with him, and he gets to devot more time to his special needs daughter and her charity, Hannah and Friends.

The only thing most ND fans are worried about is exactly what Frisco said.l As long as Charlie stays healthy, he can stay at ND as long as he wants.
