program to wipe out hard drive files

i want to wipe out anything on my hard drive(old computer). im giving it to a buddy(good dell) and want to wipe the hard drive out and reinstal leverything so none of my info is on it.

I recommend DBAN

"Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot floppy that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction".

Since most laptops don't have floppys anymore, you can also burn dban to a CD. If you want to fully ensure that you are safe, chose the DOD standard.

i think the hard drive of the old computer has a virus or 2, or even 3.

will that program completely wipe them out also?
