The Marching Owl Band of Rice is a refreshing gem in the world of collegiate halftime performances. No one can put on a show like these guys. Last night at the Texas game they had a show for the ages by taking pot shots at Texas and A&M is the same show. Unlike the Aggies with toy soldier swords, the Texas crowd for the most part gave them proper applause and many even gave a standing ovation. It made a positive write up in he Austin paper today and even the bitter Hornfans poster even sort of enjoyed it. For those who would like to know what went down, here is a good summary from a homer board...
The did 4 sets:
1. Played the theme to "Dragnet" while 3 "UT football players" where chased down by cardboard cut-out police cars.
2. Did a skit with A&M Reveille/Michael Vick throwing down
3. Narrator: Former A&M President Gates is now US Secretary of Defense. Normally we would make a joke about A&M and Defense, but then again, you could only score 7 points against them."
HUGE groans from the audience, but in a good natured way. And they did a formation of the number 7.
4. Did kind of a lame joke about both UT and Rice playing Trojans the last couple of years, except with Rice the Trojans didn't break. Get it?
All in all VERY entertaining. I would say most people didnt leave for concession until after they played. It was pretty cool.
Also, one of the band members had a baby carrier on his back, carrying a baby around. I assume it was his.
Here's a link showing some of the show...

Gotta love the MOB. Louie Louie never gets old.
As far as bands go I really don't have any use for them on the field (halftime shows). Most all of them suck and do variations of the same thing. Sure the A&M band is different at least the first time, after that you realize that everyone is just following the leader. Frisco et al will tell us just how difficult the shows are but former band members will tell you that unless you are leading a line, all you are doing is following the leader. At least they are different, but we don't see them every week. Everything else is the basically the same.
Don't get me wrong, I love having them in the stadiums, but I don't need them on the field at halftime.
