Pats V Squeelers

Found out yesterday that I will be sitting in Rodney Harrison's seats for this epic matchup. This is the one game that I have looked forward to all year. During the current decade I have had the pleasure of seeing Pats V Squeelers on several occasions. A few times in Pittsburgh and once up here. Always a great game, but 90% of the time a Patriot win. I do not see this changing this year. The Squeelers after all have lost road games to Denver, Arizona, and the freaking Jets for crying out loud. No way they come up here and beat the best. The Squeelers also are getting Holmes and Polamalu back so there will be no injury excuses like the Colts clung to. Brady goes off for 3 TD's and the Pats take it to 13-0....

Polamalu always needs a few weeks to settle back in after returning from injury. Holmes will definitely be needed in this game. The Steelers can stretch the field with him.

As for Troy, I concur with PSU. A rusty Troy is not necessarily a good Troy. I almost wish he was still out, as I have visions of Brady clowning a rusty Troy more than once.

But that being said, the real pivotal matchup might well be Townshend v Moss. He did a great job on Chad Johnson last week. If the Steelers are to win this week, he needs to step it up yet again. The secondary needs to, more than ever, give the D line a chance to create pressure through coverage. Otherwise, Brady might just as well sit back in the pocket in a lounge chair.

Another factor is what kind of wrinkles LeBeau might be able to install specifically for the Pats. He's been given far more latitude this year than he ever had under Cowher to tinker with the base defense. The man is a certified defensive genius so maybe, just maybe, he can scheme something to put some pressure on Brady.

That being said, I'm not holding out a whole lot of hope.

Pick your poison. Double Moss and that leaves single coverage on Welker, Stallworth, Watson, Gaffney, ETC. I almost honestly think the key to beating the Pats is doubling Welker. Big plays to Moss are nice, but it's those short quick routes to Welker that move the ball. Miami is so stupid for not only trading this guy but in the division no less......

Welker can't be doubled.. most of his routes are 6-7 yards and he scampers for the other 5-6 after the catch. I would love to see him and Kevin Curtis in a foot race.. fastest 2 white men I've seen in a while.. but I digress.

The Eagles gave the Patriots trouble a few ways.

First- be physical with Moss- Jaworski and few other NFL films guys confirmed that Moss was getting lazy on his routes because of the way the Eagles played him. Yes he was doubled but not all the time.

Second- the Eagles, for the first time since I can recall, played a version of the 3-4 which caught the Pats off guard and allowed them to get pressure from the LB position. Gocong had a great game b/c he was getting around the tackles of the Patriots. Lyght has had 2 sub-par weeks.

Third- Pressure Brady. Easier said than done but if you can, Brady to make 1-2 reads he'll throw it away OR you might get a sack.

The Eagles took away the Patriots long game as well as Brady's TE option and it left him with his check down of Welker. The importance of Welker to Brady can not be overstated- Faulk had been Brady's normal check down and from time to time he made plays but Welker's speed really has made a significant difference.

Cincinnati's receivers are pretty good. The one thing this tool forgets is that those receivers do not have TB throwing the ball to them.

Mike Tomlin's has done an excellent job in his Rookie season as head coach. I think the way his teams play, are what the Steelers are all about – their style of play, their toughness, what they bring to the game, and how they play the game . A win against the Patriots this week would make him a GOD in Steelerville. At least for a few weeks. Now, the Patriots face a Steelers team that has listened all season to people telling them they aren't in New England's class. That still could be the case, but if they aren't in New England's class, they are one win away from being in that class.

All the Patriots are trying to do is win a game here. So no, they are not looking at this undefeated record thing or winning by x amount of points. That doesn't mean anything until the season is over.

This game reminded me a lot of the regular season game the Steelers played against the Colts in 2005. Right down to Ike Taylor getting caught peeking in the backfield on a play fake only to get burned for a big play (with no help from Anthony Smith I might add). :x

The good things I saw were that Parker was able to run effectively and Ben's decision making under pressure was solid. Defensively, early on they did have some limited success in getting Brady out of his rhythm and they held Maroney to 18 yards and 2.3 a carry.

The bad things were that pressure on Brady ceased to exist after the start of the 3rd quarter, Ben got sacked 3 times and they couldn't/wouldn't run the ball deep in the red zone when they needed to most. Oh, and Santonio Holmes was essentially invisible.

And the downright ugly thing? Well that would have to be their play on deep pass plays. Smith talked a huge game, and then failed to back up a single fucking word of it. He had no big hits and got torched twice on deep plays allowing Pats receivers to get behind him. That kind of play is absolutely unforgivable. It shows a lack of preparation, personal accountability and respect for his opponent. Smith has all the potential to be a great safety in the NFL. But if he doesn't get his head in the game he'll never realize it.

Nice job Asterisk's. Here's to a rematch in January.

Frankly, the Steelers would not have gotten past the Pats in 2005 had Denver not taken them out. The Steelers don't match up well against NE. The 3-4 is a good defense against the run, and against slower-developing passing...but the spread offense and quick release that Brady runs so well is just too quick when you're relying on LBs for pressure on the pocket.

Agreed. I'm hoping that a rematch will see a new defensive approach implemented. There's no way Tomlin can look at that game film and not see the schematic issues. You simply can't pressure Brady fast enough with the LB's currently on the Steelers roster.

Of course it would help if guys who were playing underneath zone coverage would have recognized their responsibilities better. There were way too many times that Steelers defenders were just plain out of position when they should have been taking away Brady's passing lanes/jumping routes.

Brady is the best spread offense QB I've ever seen. If someone is open, he sees him, and can hit him. Even the best DB in the history of the NFL would have trouble defending the width of the field to the degree that is necessary.

Remember in '04, where some talking heads told us that the Pats lacked talent at the WR position? The indeed did...but Brady ended up making them look good. Now, they have the talent they lacked...in spades.

Frankly, I see them going unbeaten. They've been through their toughest tests already.
