Pardon the lack of news from the PSU sector. This is a time of soul-searching for the PSU program and fan base.

Wasn't the D Coordinator supposed to take over?

The thinking is this...Bradley would be successor chosen by Paterno, but it has become apparent that Joe will not prefer to ever actually retire on his own...and he seems reluctant to even think about the topic. Therefore, Bradley's vague seeming ascendancy will never advance past legendary status, because the administration will have to step in and take control of the situation - i.e. not renew Joe's contract that expires after the 2008 season.
The time where Joe could step forward and announce who his successor will be has gone right past us, because he waited too long. If the administration has to undergo a national search, then they will want to know when they can begin, because they'll try to do a good job with that search.
It's kind of a tough situation for everyone involved. No one wants to shove Joe out, but clarity is very much needed.

Leave Joe Paterno ALONE!!!!
Sincerely,

It is a tough situation, Joe Pa did so much for the program but they will never be a power again(just a big name), as long as he stays.
If he isn't willing to step-down think the PSU powers-that-be will be willing to take him down publicly?
I agree that the DC is probably about screwed in terms of becoming HC, by the time they get Joe out of there they'll probably want a big name.

You gonna bark all day little doggie or are you gonna bite?

Graham Spanier, PSU's President, is in a delicate position. Joe is, of course, a national icon of sorts, and you can't just sever that relationship.
I think the truth is, Joe will not give up the reins willingly. He'll have to be shown the sense of stepping aside, hopefully he will see the light eventually.
Many PSU fans worry that Joe will be bitter about it, that his considerable fund-raising abilities will be taken away.
Personally, I think that Joe should not be seen as tying his HC status with his overall good will towards the university. If he seems to be saying that he'll only play nice as long as they let him control the football program, then he'll really be in danger of spoiling his legacy. All of these decades spent talking up PSU...when he realizes that he can just as easily do that as a former HC, it will be tough to undermine those years of effort.

from everything i have read and heard, the gig is schianos when JoePa steps down.
which has been the reason he hasn't taken one of the very good job openings in recent years. He's not staying at Rutgers for another 5-10 years, and he has said NO to some biggies, so the thinking, is he's waiting for," that job". And the PSU job is probably That Job!
