Tennessee's Cleats Under Scrutiny

Ohio State football coach John Cooper said he can prove that some Tennessee players in the Citrus Bowl wore cleats that were too long. NCAA rules limit the length of cleats to one-half inch, but Cooper told the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch in a story published yesterday that some Volunteers used three-quarter inch cleats. He said he has one of the shoes worn in the game by Volunteers WR Joey Kent. Cooper had said he was reluctant to discuss the issue because he didn't want it to sound like he was making excuses for the Buckeyes' 20-14 loss.

He and his staff noticed the longer cleats during warmups and early in the game. He called it to the officials' attention, "but they didn't do ...

TENNESSEE GETS NO PENALTY FOR USING LONG CLEATS IN BOWL

The NCAA has accepted Tennessee's explanation for outfitting 19 football players with soccer cleats that violated rules during the Vols' rain-soaked Citrus Bowl victory over Ohio State. Ohio State coach John Cooper raised the issue during the Jan. 2 game in Orlando, Fla., but officials did nothing about it. He commented about it later, though he said he wasn't trying to make excuses for the 20-14 loss. College football rules specify cleats can be no

Basketball's bizarre outlaw street code left Bruce Pearl on the game's second tier for an excessive length of time. But Pearl, branded an NCAA snitch after turning in Illinois for alleged recruiting violations in 1989, made the best of it. Made himself a good head coach. Made himself into the program-builder he is today. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/ ... ortCat=ncb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On Wednesday, sources told ESPN that Moore, a two-time national high school player of the year, received improper benefits during an unofficial recruiting visit in October, 2005 when UConn's coaching staff arranged for her to take a tour of ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn.
Also Friday, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt neither confirmed nor denied Tennessee's involvement in the case. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/news/story?id=3293975" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
