How much of a factor do you think the problems at Iowa will be in recruiting? I just read that David Barrent switched his commitment to MSU from Iowa. I'm beginning to think that this alleged rape/cover up will hurt the University pretty badly. How many commits does the U of I normally have at this time of year? Do you think Iowa may have to get rid of Kirk just to stop the bleeding?

I think it will have some affect in recruiting but not too much. We do a pretty shitty job recruiting anyways, so it's not like a bunch of Top 100 players are now going to look elsewhere. Kirk can't recruit......period.
But there is no way he's getting fired. A better option to stop the bleeding would be getting rid of Barta, but I doubt that happens either.

Barrent's father has some connections at MSU, so I presume that had something to do with it. I'd also presume he felt his decision was better for his football career.
btw, didn't ferentz pull a top 10 recruiting class a few years ago? Anomaly, I know...

Football has very little to do with it if what I'm being told is true.
Okay, I've got some inside info on this (well, kind of). It's more I'm going by the opinion of someone.
Anyways, Barrent went to my old HS. Don't know him, never met him. Know nothing about him. But I do know that Ben Bruns is an assistant coach at WDM Valley High and has been training Barrent quite a bit. I only know this because I have a good friend who used to play at Iowa (also went to Valley) and he knows Bruns not only from playing against him when Bruns was at ISU, but also from growing up. Bruns is an avid Hawkeye hater. He hates Iowa more than I hate Notre Dame. He's open about that. With Bruns being a former All-Conference offensive lineman, you'd figure Barrent would listen to what he has to say. But according to my buddy he says he's convinced that Bruns played a big role in this and tried to persuade him to look elsewhere. Michigan State was apparently his 2nd choice originally. Basically, it sounds like it has EVERYTHING to do with the rape scandal going on. My guess is Bruns convinced him because of the rape scandal he'd be better suited to go to Michigan State.
It's possible this could be false and that Barrent just had a change of heart as I'm basing this on pure speculation from someone I consider a very reliable source. Who knows the real reason he left! We may never find out. I wish him good luck and hope he carries on the proud WDM Valley tradition of kicking ass and taking names in college!
