Remembering Joe Roth

Post by Blueblood »

I was 9 at the time and my parents called me into the family room to tell me the news that Joe had died. It was the first time someone close to me passed and I remember asking why he died while crying. I never met Joe but I felt close to him since he was my quarterback.

A "quote" from Barry Switzer – Head Football Coach,
University of Oklahoma (1973-1988)

"He's the best I've seen as a coach."

"Roth is the best I've faced as a coach. None of the others had such a quick delivery with such a great arm while throwing such a soft ball – all of his should be caught.

Most of you are too young to remember... Joe Roth.

no disrespect to Roth (though, you did this last year and maybe the year before)...but i bet that Switzer quote is before 1981, when a Stanford freshman named John Elway beat OU in Norman. Switzer, for all his wins and 3 NC's, was always kind of mystified by the forward pass.

here's the box score for that game, btw: i was right: 1976. heck, i probably went to that game.

OU was 2-2 on passing attempts.

Hmmm, it was a road game and Cal lost by double digits and they gave up nearly 500 rushing yards to a team that couldn't throw.

'Bout par for the course.

76 OU was probably in the bottom half of Switzer's teams, to be honest. only 81, 83 and 84 come to mind as worse.

Maybe we can mark the anniversary of his untimely death by announcing Joe Roth day. That way m2 won't have to make this post every year. We can dust off the same thread and put it on display each year. Eventually JC Penney will have a Roth Day sale on boxer shorts and home furnishings. Behold the possibilities.
