Holy crap, Oklahoma!

The biggest story at this point is Oklahoma's domination of the draft board. The Sooners have the No. 1 overall pick in QB Sam Bradford but also have four of the top six selections and five projected first-rounders overall.
If this happens, man, I've got to think it'll be an NFL draft record. I certainly can't recall any one team dominating the 1st round like that, much less the very top of the 1st round like that.

Also, Moby Dick, I might wanna reserve the right to rescind my promise to start listening to rap music if the Big XII gets nine out of the first ten picks in next year's draft...

Four of the first six picks, and five overall in the 1st round? I don't think Miami did that. I don't even think the '79 Trojans, with this group...

Marcus Allen
Chip Banks
Joey Browner
Ronnie Lott
Dennis Smith
Jeff Fisher
Bruce Matthews
Don Mosebar
Anthony Munoz
Keith Van Horne
Charles White

...did that, and that group was very likely the single most talented college football team of all time, in terms of NFL production, with four NFL Hall Of Famers; all the rest were All Pros, many of 'em multiple times, except for Keith Van Horne and Jeff Fisher, who were both still really good.

Looking at that 2002 Miami team...

Offense
QB- Ken Dorsey, Derrick Crudup
FB- Kyle Cobia, Quadtrine Hill
RB- Willis McGahee, Jarrett Payton, Frank Gore
WR- Andre Johnson, Jason Geathers
WR- Kevin Beard, Ethenic Sands
TE- Kellen Winslow II, David Williams
LT- Carlos Joseph, Tony Tella
LG- Sherko Haji-Rasouli, Joe McGrath
C- Brett Romberg. Joel Rodriguez
RG- Ed Wilkins, Chris Myers
RT- Vernon Carey , Rashad Butler

Defense
DE- Andrew Williams, Jamaal Green
DT- Matt Walters, Santonio Thomas
DT- William Joseph, Vince Wilfork
DE- Jerome McDougle, Cornelius Green
WLB- D.J. Williams, Jerrel Weaver
MLB- Jonathan Vilma, Leon Williams
SLB- Howard Clark, Rocky McIntosh
CB- Al Marshall, Jean Leone
CB- Kelly Jennings, Antrel Rolle
SS- Maurice Sikes, Marcus Maxey
FS- Sean Taylor, James Scott

Special Teams
K- Todd Sievers, Mark Gent
P- Freddie Capshaw, Dan Lundy

...nah, that team isn't even close to the '79 USC team, in terms of NFL talent. I'm nearly positive they didn't get four of the first six picks in the draft, either.

Hell, let's just look it up...

Here's the 1st round of the 2003 NFL draft, which would've included the 2002 Miami Gangsta's...

1 Cincinnati Bengals Carson Palmer [5] Quarterback USC
2 Detroit Lions Charles Rogers Wide Receiver Michigan State
3 Houston Texans Andre Johnson Wide Receiver Miami (FL)
4 New York Jets (from Chicago) Dewayne Robertson Defensive Tackle Kentucky
5 Dallas Cowboys Terence Newman Cornerback Kansas State
6 New Orleans Saints (from Cardinals) Johnathan Sullivan Defensive Tackle Georgia
7 Jacksonville Jaguars [6] Byron Leftwich Quarterback Marshall
8 Carolina Panthers [6] Jordan Gross Offensive Tackle Utah
9 Minnesota Vikings [6] Kevin Williams Defensive Tackle Oklahoma State
10 Baltimore Ravens Terrell Suggs Defensive End/Linebacker Arizona State
11 Seattle Seahawks Marcus Trufant Cornerback Washington State
12 St. Louis Rams Jimmy Kennedy Defensive Tackle Penn State
13 New England Patriots (from Washington through NY Jets and Chicago) Ty Warren Defensive End Texas A&M
14 Chicago Bears (from Buffalo through New England) Michael Haynes Defensive End Penn State
15 Philadelphia Eagles (from San Diego) Jerome McDougle Defensive End Miami (FL)
16 Pittsburgh Steelers (from Kansas City) Troy Polamalu Safety USC
17 Arizona Cardinals (from Miami through New Orleans) Bryant Johnson Wide Receiver Penn State
18 Arizona Cardinals (from New Orleans) Calvin Pace Defensive End Wake Forest
19 Baltimore Ravens (from New England) Kyle Boller Quarterback California
20 Denver Broncos George Foster Offensive Tackle Georgia
21 Cleveland Browns Jeff Faine Center Notre Dame
22 Chicago Bears (from NY Jets) Rex Grossman Quarterback Florida
23 Buffalo Bills (from Atlanta) Willis McGahee Running Back Miami (FL)
24 Indianapolis Colts Dallas Clark Tight End Iowa
25 New York Giants William Joseph Defensive Tackle Miami (FL)
26 San Francisco 49ers Kwame Harris Offensive Tackle Stanford
27 Kansas City Chiefs (from Pittsburgh) Larry Johnson Running Back Penn State
28 Tennessee Titans Andre Woolfolk Cornerback Oklahoma
29 Green Bay Packers Nick Barnett Linebacker Oregon State
30 San Diego Chargers (from Philadelphia) Sammy Davis Cornerback Texas A&M
31 Oakland Raiders Nnamdi Asomugha Cornerback California
32 Oakland Raiders (from Tampa Bay) [7] Tyler Brayton Defensive End Colorado

One guy in the Top 10, four overall in the 1st round.

I'm not sure any team has ever had five 1st rounders, and I'd just about bet my house no team has ever had four of the first six picks. USC had four 1st rounders last year, and seven players taken on the first day, and they just barely missed doing it again this year, but five 1st rounders, including a near monopoly at the very top? That would be strong...

in 1977 USC had 3 of the first 5 picks in the draft, I think the year that Miami had all those first round picks, they tied a USC team from the 70's or 80's, too lazy to look it up. I do know that USC leads in all time First Rounders

Like I showed there, Miami had four 1st rounders from that '02 team, which has happened with at least a few teams, including last year's USC team, the '06 Ohio St team and the '07 LSU team. Only one of Miami's four 1st rounders was in the Top 10, however. USC's three of the Top 5 in '77 probably has never been bettered because I'm almost positive nobody's done four in the top five, or four in the top six.

Holy fuck, looking some of this stuff up, Miami had six 1st rounders in the 2004 draft. Six! Only two were in the Top 10, bit still...six!!?? That's gotta be a record.

i'm confused what you are saying here. I'm pretty sure Marcus Allen played in a game at USC against OU in 80 or 81. How would he be in the 79 draft? and was certainly behind Charles White a couple years....who you also have in this '79 list?

edit: game was 1981.

Marcus Allen was in the '82 draft. The group Van posted all played for USC in '79, but that group was spread out over 3, maybe even 4, class years. Which helps explain why USC never dominated a single draft to the extent Van was looking for in that period.

That isn't necessariily USC's draft class for that season, but those people were all on the '79 team. They were other great players on that team as well, such as Brad Budde...

That would be amazing, granted it won't hold.

I don't know the record for first rounders taken, but I do know that the overall record was in 1984 when 18 Longhorns were drafted. Around here we get that number thrown out each year at draft time. Surprised someone like ND or Navy, etc didn't have more than that though back in the days when the draft went 30 plus rounds.

Lefty, they may throw that "18 draft picks in '84" number around there ever year, but it's wrong. Texas did not have 18 players drafted in '84, despite the draft being twelve rounds back then.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_NFL_Draft

1st round: 1 player

2nd round: 2 players (only 3 first day draft picks, by modern draft standards-however, there were only 28 teams then)

3rd round: 2 players

4th round: 1 player

5th round: 2 players

6th round: 0 players

7th round: 1 player (9 players taken overall in the draft, by modern draft standards)

8th round: 2 players

9th round: 2 players

10th round: 2 players

11th round: 0 players

12th round: 1 player

They had 16 players drafted, not 18, and that also includes the supplemental draft.

Checking the years on either side of '84, just in case you got the year wrong, Texas had only one player taken in the entire draft in '83, a 6th rounder, and they had four players taken in the '85 draft. So, it looks like you have the correct year, but they're exaggerating the number.

Mossy Cade CB 1st San Diego Chargers
Doug Dawson OT 2nd St. Louis Cardinals
Ed Williams DE 2nd New England Patriots
Fred Acorn CB 3rd Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Rick McIvor QB 3rd St. Louis Cardinals
Craig Curry DB 4th Indianapolis Colts
Jitter Fields WR 5th New Orleans Saints
Eric Holle DB 5th Kansas City Chiefs
Jeff Leiding LB 5th St. Louis Cardinals
John Haines DT 7th Minnesota Vikings
David Jones C 8th Detroit Lions
Ray Woodard DT 8th San Diego Chargers
Adam Schreiber C 9th Seattle Seahawks
John Walker RB 9th St. Louis Cardinals
Kirk McJunkin OG 10th Pittsburgh Steelers
Bobby Micho TB 10th Denver Broncos
Mark Lang LB 11th Kansas City Chiefs
Mike Ruether - Supplemental Pick C 1st (17) St. Louis Cardinals

You are going to have to show me something other than wikipedia to get me to believe it. The above list came from the local paper on chron.com

Also, Andre Ware a Texas hater uses the number each year and talks about how he can't believe it. Not that he hasn't been wrong before and he sure will be again, but I think he is correct on this one.

Yeah, you can't always trust Wikipedia. I edited Trev Albert's Wiki page a few weeks back to help spark an internet rumor that he was taking over a Des Moines sports talk show and that got people on a Cyclone message board pissed off because they all thought a Husker was going to host a show here. I gotta say though, what I did was fucking hilarious! It caused an epic meltdown for a day or 2!!

Even back in the day when the service academies were powers, the military obligation always was an impediment to their players being drafted.

30+ rounds? You sure about that, or just exaggerating? I'm old enough to remember the draft going 18 rounds, albeit with six fewer teams than there are today, so that would be the equivalent of about a 14-15 round draft today.

Another site has something like 9 of the top 10 picks coming from the Big 12 and 7 from either Texas or Oklahoma. They have Sergio, Ulatowski, and Colt all going in the top 10 along with Bradford, Gresham, Williams, and McCoy. The other guys were a olinemen from Missorui and Dez Bryant.

Still way too early to call something like this.

From NFL.com

Shows the 1951 draft thru round 30. Granted many of the draftees are missing but it does list a pick in the 30th round.

Looks like there were only 10 teams back then. So a 30-round draft in 1951 would be about the equivalent of a 9-10 round draft today. A little longer than we have now, but not nearly the equivalent of the 18-round draft in the 1970's.
