The biggest story at this point is Oklahoma's domination of the draft board. The Sooners have the No. 1 overall pick in QB Sam Bradford but also have four of the top six selections and five projected first-rounders overall.

If this happens, man, I've got to think it'll be an NFL draft record. I certainly can't recall any one team dominating the 1st round like that, much less the very top of the 1st round like that.

Also, Moby Dick, I might wanna reserve the right to rescind my promise to start listening to rap music if the Big XII gets nine out of the first ten picks in next year's draft...

Miami 2002 NFL draft. Too lazy to Google it, but they tore that shit up.

One guy in the Top 10, four overall in the 1st round.

I'm not sure any team has ever had five 1st rounders, and I'd just about bet my house no team has ever had four of the first six picks. USC had four 1st rounders last year, and seven players taken on the first day, and they just barely missed doing it again this year, but five 1st rounders, including a near monopoly at the very top? That would be strong...

in 1977 USC had 3 of the first 5 picks in the draft, I think the year that Miami had all those first round picks, they tied a USC team from the 70's or 80's, too lazy to look it up. I do know that USC leads in all time First Rounders

Like I showed there, Miami had four 1st rounders from that '02 team, which has happened with at least a few teams, including last year's USC team, the '06 Ohio St team and the '07 LSU team. Only one of Miami's four 1st rounders was in the Top 10, however. USC's three of the Top 5 in '77 probably has never been bettered because I'm almost positive nobody's done four in the top five, or four in the top six.

Holy fuck, looking some of this stuff up, Miami had six 1st rounders in the 2004 draft. Six! Only two were in the Top 10, bit still...six!!?? That's gotta be a record.

i'm confused what you are saying here. I'm pretty sure Marcus Allen played in a game at USC against OU in 80 or 81. How would he be in the 79 draft? and was certainly behind Charles White a couple years....who you also have in this '79 list?

Marcus Allen was in the '82 draft. The group Van posted all played for USC in '79, but that group was spread out over 3, maybe even 4, class years. Which helps explain why USC never dominated a single draft to the extent Van was looking for in that period.

That isn't necessariily USC's draft class for that season, but those people were all on the '79 team. They were other great players on that team as well, such as Brad Budde...

I don't know the record for first rounders taken, but I do know that the overall record was in 1984 when 18 Longhorns were drafted. Around here we get that number thrown out each year at draft time. Surprised someone like ND or Navy, etc didn't have more than that though back in the days when the draft went 30 plus rounds.

Lefty, they may throw that "18 draft picks in '84" number around there ever year, but it's wrong. Texas did not have 18 players drafted in '84, despite the draft being twelve rounds back then.

2nd round: 2 players (only 3 first day draft picks, by modern draft standards-however, there were only 28 teams then)

3rd round: 2 players

4th round: 1 player

5th round: 2 players

7th round: 1 player (9 players taken overall in the draft, by modern draft standards)

8th round: 2 players

9th round: 2 players

10th round: 2 players

11th round: 0 players

12th round: 1 player

They had 16 players drafted, not 18, and that also includes the supplemental draft.

Checking the years on either side of '84, just in case you got the year wrong, Texas had only one player taken in the entire draft in '83, a 6th rounder, and they had four players taken in the '85 draft. So, it looks like you have the correct year, but they're exaggerating the number.

Yeah, you can't always trust Wikipedia. I edited Trev Albert's Wiki page a few weeks back to help spark an internet rumor that he was taking over a Des Moines sports talk show and that got people on a Cyclone message board pissed off because they all thought a Husker was going to host a show here. Even back in the day when the service academies were powers, the military obligation always was an impediment to their players being drafted.

30+ rounds? You sure about that, or just exaggerating? I'm old enough to remember the draft going 18 rounds, albeit with six fewer teams than there are today, so that would be the equivalent of about a 14-15 round draft today.

Another site has something like 9 of the top 10 picks coming from the Big 12 and 7 from either Texas or Oklahoma. They have Sergio, Ulatowski, and Colt all going in the top 10 along with Bradford, Gresham, Williams, and McCoy. The other guys were a olinemen from Missorui and Dez Bryant.

Still way too early to call something like this.

Looks like there were only 10 teams back then. So a 30-round draft in 1951 would be about the equivalent of a 9-10 round draft today. A little longer than we have now, but not nearly the equivalent of the 18-round draft in the 1970's.
