There was no Soviet expansion at all during the (phony) Cold War. They abided by the Yalta agreement. As to why the U.S. and European allies would have agreed to such a shameless carving up of sovereign nations is another matter. But the American government has been the ruthless expansionist, invading various nations in Central and South America dozens of times..

The invasion of Vietnam was a horrific war crime, period. Truman had agreed that France could resume its own barbaric colonial subjugation of Vietnam following WWII, and when the Vietnamese drove them out, the U.S. shamelessly attacked and destroyed the peaceful nation.
