CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -- Tyler Thigpen completed 24 of 36 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns to led Coastal Carolina to a 31-27 win over defending Division I-AA national champions James Madison on Saturday night.
Thigpen threw two touchdown passes in the final six minutes to give the Chanticleers' young (2-0) program their biggest victory ever.
Trailing 27-24, Thigpen connected on an 8-yard pass to Perry Parks that put the Chanticleers ahead with 30 seconds remaining. Thigpen found Jerome Simpson on a 23-yard scoring pass to cut into James Madison's lead to 27-24. Simpson had 10 catches for 162 yards.
The Dukes (1-1) were led by Alvin Banks, who rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Justin Rascati was 16 of 21 for 171 yards passing.
Coastal Carolina led 17-14 at the half, but James Madison scored 14 unanswered points. Rascati scored on a 10-yard run and Maurice Fenner added a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:52 to go in the final quarter.
The Chanticleers outgained the Dukes 415-316 on offense.
Coastal Carolina is playing in just its third season, but went 10-1 last season, winning the Big South Conference.
