Double engine failure.

Pilot did an admirable job of trying to get the plane down on the freeway.
He and the co-pilot died.
Three passengers survived!

Test your aeronautical knowledge!

.

Q: "What is the primary advantage of rotary winged aircraft over fixed-winged aircraft?"

.

This should be an easy quiz for those who have even a modicum of knowledge about aircraft.

However, the answer may surprise you...

Trying to imagine the one-two punch of Left Seater piloting an Air Canada flight. The birds would be vultures. Or just the reincarnated ghosts of previous victims who died trying to reach their destination decades ago.

Lefty would not slam his airliner into a wall, killing "most" of the 181 passengers onboard.

It is a *disturbing* video, so be warned.

Jeju Air (which I have flown) has apologized for the incident and will do its best to manage the situation.

I feel better now.

If only there’d been a couple rows of tires along that wall…

If Lefty was at the controls and there were survivors, tales of their harrowing escape would get old pretty quick and you'd quickly lose interest. I know you can count on Lefty to crash a second plane, just to introduce a fresh cast of characters.

All the stories coming off the wires are it was a bird strike on the aircraft, but the film shows the landing gear wasn't deployed. Wondering where this is headed, the investigation is in good hands. Sewol Pt II ?

Not really sure how a birdstrike would disable the landing gear. Seater?

Look, lots of theories out there but the two black boxes have been recovered so we will know a lot soon. What we do know is these cats got it to the runway and pretty much on the centerline. Good flying if they had no power producing engines.

Further we know there was a berm/ wall at the end of the runway which is a horrible idea. The localizer was placed atop this berm from what I heard on BBC (currently in Europe.) The US /Canada and Uk / Europe would never allow this burm at the end of a runway. If it isn’t there we likely don’t have the same number of deaths.

As to the question of birds taking out the entire hydraulic system, that seems a stretch, but I wasn’t there and will reserve judgement. Both pilots seem to have had plenty of time in their respective seats. So this isnt like the Lion Air Max crash where had the same thing happened to US trained pilots there would have been no issue and certainly no crash.

Hopefully both pilots were able to hand fly the plane. We have seen far too many examples of Asian pilots who rely on the automation and have almost zero hand flying skills. See Asiana crash at SFO. I think they were given the fact they put it on the runway.

That was my first reaction when I saw this incident.

Reminded me of NFL games played at Wrigley Field back in the day.
The brick outfield wall was right up against the back of one of the end zones.

The Asian women driver stereotype has merit?

Don't get too cocky. I think Asiana survivors who were ejected from the aircraft onto the runway were run over and killed by SF fire engines.

If the wall was not there, it seems likely that nobody would have died.

Well neither of the Asiana pilots were female, but they clearly were unable to hand fly a 777. Fantastic weather, light winds. The ILS glide slope was inoperable but this was in the NOTAMs. The pilots let the airspeed get too slow and the plane too low.

So not sure about the female part but firemen at SFO did run over and kill 2 waitresses.

I think it was one waitress got run over twice. Probably took too long bringing the check.

Good waitstaff are hard to find, so when you do come across a good one, tip well friends.

Absolutely. A few extra bucks can make someone’s day.
