What's in your goodies cabinet?

My poker group is taking the 3 hr. trek over to central Oregon and we'll be staying at my buddies golf course home. The place has a great pool room with a stocked bar. One room will have our poker table, and that game will be on Saturday night.

Anyhoots...I got the email and was told my food duty this fall was the snack/dessert/treats. It isn't so much that I have to actually make something from scratch, but I do have to provide something.

I need you to give me some ideas on what the fuck is not just good out there on the market, but what is GREAT. I can cook, so if it needs that, then give it to me. But preferably, give me something that will work. I would have posted this in the cooking forum but more than likely I'll get responses that don't involve cooking...it just involves buying.

The particulars: Seven guys, no wives. Three nights of massive alcohol consumption, dart playing, poker playing, a little golf, and whatnot. The once yearly chronic has showed up in the past...ages range 30 to 60. Last year someone brought a huge bag of Skittles, and about 6 of those large Cadbury Fruit n Nut candy bars. Skittles, well...you either love them or hate them. Same goes with the candy bars.

So what do you suggest for this type of weekend?

Depends if you're leaning toward the "snack" or the "treat" side, Luth.

If it's the snack side, Beer Nuts/cashews/almonds always work, along with a couple of bags of salted, in-the-shell peanuts.

If it's something on the sweet side, the deli/bakery section of your grocery should have lots of in-store baked cookies and pies.

My store does these killer bite-size pecan pies that they package in a try with a cover. They also sell lemon and chocolate nut squares.

If you're just looking to buy some Dolly Madison or Hostess crap and call it good, raspberry zingers are the bomb.

Also, if you happen to pass a Quiznos on the way, snatch up as many toffee snickerdoodle cookies you can find. A bit pricey, but those cookies are killah.

C'mon, I've got all the salt dishes down. Drive on over to COSTCO and grab those plastic tubs of Cashew's, or peanuts, or the mixed bag....Those are always a given when you have poker.

I want shit that is special, mang. Anybody have a recipe that involves melted malted milk balls, blah blah? Something unique...I don't care. I want somebody like Roach, who might have burnt a 1/4 lb. of hemp and stumbled upon some great mixture. You know, like...Quarter up Snicker's candy bars, add blue diamond almonds, and spread them on a baking pan...broil low for 7 minutes. Stuff like that.

Actually, the above sounded pretty good.

Cap'n Crunch Crusted Chicken

This version of "fried chicken" is sure to please just about any kid. Baked chicken coated in honey and then the crushed cereal gives the chicken a crisp, greaseless crust. For adults, substitute crushed corn flakes and pecans for a satisfying meal.

Yield: 8 servings

1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
4 (6-ounce) boneless skinless chicken breast halves
8 (4-ounce) chicken tenderloins
1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
3/4 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1 1/4 cups finely crushed Cap'n Crunch (Optional for adults, substitute cornflakes) (about 4 cups uncrushed cereal)
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans (Optional, for the adult version)
Cooking spray

Preheat oven to 400°.
Sprinkle salt and pepper evenly over chicken; set aside. Combine honey, mustard, paprika, and garlic powder in a small bowl; stir well. Place the crushed cereal in a shallow dish. (If making the adult version, combine the cornflakes and pecans in a shallow dish; stir well.) Brush both sides of chicken with honey mixture; dredge in the cereal.

Place chicken pieces on a large baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Lightly coat chicken with cooking spray, and bake chicken breasts at 400° for 40 minutes or until done; chicken tenderloins will be done in about 20 minutes. To check doneness, pierce the chicken at its thickest part. If the juices run clear, your chicken is done.

Sweet stuff for drunken debauchery...are you kidding me?

Here, Luth.

This is a simple enough recipe.

Brown some lean hamburger (drain the grease, you dumbass).

Toss it into a crock-pot set on low heat.

Add:
One pound Velveeta
One jar of Rotel
One tub of Sour Cream

stir occassionally

Now, after you've cooked that up, just unplug the crockpot and tote it along and re-heat once you get where you're going. Pick up a bag of Tortilla chips for dipping.

The crock pot will go home empty.

I had never heard of Rotel, so I googled it. I *think* I've seen it on the shelf at the grocery store. Diced Tomato and Green Chile... Anyway at the Rotel page they have a recipe section and they had WW's dip in there.

They also had some other interesting recipes...from dips, to casseroles to eggs rancheros, chili etc. I read a few of them but I found myself salivating all over my keyboard. I know it didn't fit the needs that my email called for (dessert), but I now have some more snack ideas.

Earlier someone mentioned those individual sized pecan filled mini pies/tart things. Yeah, those are killa too. I remember the wife bringing those home in that clear plastic container that is impossible to open at 0100 and not wake everyone in the family. Engulf them with a cold glass of milk and it is outstanding. They didn't taste that great with beer though.

I think the pecan thing is the leader right now...

Best and easist desert munchies for party like taht is Chocolate Chip Pan cookies.

The easy way is to buy the pre-made shit (in your grocers dairy aisle) spread it on the bottom of the pan and bake it 5 Minutes Less than the instructions say so it doesn't turn to brick.

Here's a recipe if you actually wanna mix shit together:

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 (12 ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375* Grease a 15x10-inch jelly roll pan.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl.
Beat butter, both sugars and vanilla in large mixer bowl.
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each.
Gradually beat flour mixture into butter mixture.
Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.
Spread into prepared pan.
Bake 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Luth -- the big sourdough pretzels they have at Winco are pretty grubbinzee. A 1.5 pound bag is like $1.

Cook a great big tri-tip and slice it into finger food.

Stew some hot dogs, sausages, Lil' Smokies, or whatever in some Brent's BBQ sauce(or another brand...like the Kraft shit you get at Winco for $0.75 a bottle). Serve it with Whitey's Velveeta goo on a bun.

Get large flour tortillas. Smear both sides with butter. Throw them in a medium pan, and brown both sides. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, roll them up, cut into slices, and watch the stoners come running.


Make a 6-foot dagwood-sub with everything. Slice it up.

Have containers of shredded/ground beef, refried/black beans, cheese, onions, and all that stuff, with flour tortillas. Leave it on the counter(meat and beans should be kept at at least 140 degrees as to avoid unnecessary pooping the next day), and people can roll up a burrito anytime they want.


Mix a bunch of peanut butter with about half as much honey, with about half again that much amount of powdered milk. Mix it all together, roll into bite sized balls, roll the balls in powdered sugar, which keeps them from sticking together while stored. Mmmmmm......

Oddly about the high dessert altitude of where I'll be. It isn't really that high really, but it messed with my morning-after-poker-breakfast-duties last year. I had to do the pancakes.

Bend has an altitude of 3600 feet. Where my buddies house is, is right on Wedgi Creek Golf course, and I'm sure it is higher than 3600 but I don't know how much.

Anyway, I tried to make pancakes and they turned out like crepes. Image I should have known better because the night before we BBQ'd steaks on his gas grill. There was 7 steaks on the grill and at full bore power it still took an hour. Something to do with altitude, gas/valve thing or whatnot. He said if his propane tank is half full then it works like a charm.

I don't know the science involved but I hope either Dins, Van or the Lab Rat can come in and tell me.

You don't gain much altitude , its pretty close in to Bend anyho.

Since your going throught Bend proper, my advice , and it does not really matter anyway, since your on a hang over by now, would be to call the Safeway there in Bend, tell the deli bitch what you want/need, how much you will spend and then pick it up, and since the liquor store is in the same complex, you can cover that as well.

The once a year chronic thing will go MUCH better if you all take the lift at Mt Bachelor, hike that short distance to the top and then spark away. An extra 5000 feet does wonders for the buzz.

No need for any qualifiers here like "before, during, or after". If you use alcohol to any degree whatsoever, stay the fuck away from acetominophin.

As Dinsy alluded to, the liver has it's hands full processing the alcohol. It simply can't handle the acetominophen as well.

Wondering how the ol' liver handles acetaminophen when alcohol isn't involved?

I'm not exactly at the Kenny Easley level of poppin' 'em but I'm good for nine or so Tylenol over the course of a day (along with four to six Isomeths and who knows how many Vicodin, which already includes Tylenol) on a bad migraine day.

In a normal week, minus any severe migraines, I'm still usually good for three to six Tylenol, every three or four days or so.

Luth, in one fell swoop you managed to mention three of my favorite posters, two of which I forgot to include in my T1B HOF list: Dins, you and MtLR.

I gotta admit it: I take you for granted. Not in a preciously gay way, no. Moreso in a grass is green way. You're just...there. You're a given.

No excuse though. Big time error on my part.

MtLR is a different deal. Dude just instantly became one of my favorite reads. I've yet to see anything from the guy that wasn't dead nuts solid.

As for your grub choices for what Susan refers to as "snackles", well, fuck. You've already eliminated the "salt family", so there goes some of our usual favorite examples of finger food garbage like nachos, Jeno's little square pizza rolls (New Years Day favorite for thirty years 'round my house), Lay's big ol' ruffled chips with French onion dip and the more recent favorite, chips and salsa.

Somebody mentioned trays of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and yeah, that'll work too, though that's seriously kinda Tiger Beat Slumber Party for a Poker Night.

Other than maybe hot dogs/hamburgers along with some chips and salsa I'm not really sure how you can beat ordering up some delivery pizza...

For about a 5 year period, when i was in my mid 20's, I used to get brain splitting headaches every fall, usually when the weather started changing. I'd see spots (like after a flash goes off) and knew one was coming on. Un fucking bearable pain - Sort of like someone jabbing an ice pick through the back of my skull and right through my left (always left) eye.

Saw several doctors, had CAT scans, MRIs and every fucking blood test known to medicine. Several times I had the wife drive me to the ER where, if it didn't take 2+ hours to get in (by which time the headache was subsiding) they'd shoot me up with valium to knock me out.

Finally found a doc who diagnosed them as cluster headaches - and was honest enough to tell me they had no clue what caused them, or how to stop them - By then I had been on everything from Tropol to Amitriptiline.

The one thing he prescribed, that actually helped, was when I felt one coming on to breathe pure oxygen. I got a script and had a o2 tank in my car and when one came on I'd huff it for 15-20 minutes. I'd say it stopped about 80% of the headaches from going out of control.

One year, as I was preparing for them to start again - they didn't.
And just like that they never came back. It's Been 12 years since I had one.

KC, yeah, I've been diagnosed with both stress headaches, cluster headaches, migraines and even...cluster migraines!

It's all the same thing, basically. They don't know, is the point, which you also found out.

"Stress", being the phrase of surrender they use to admit that they can't pinpoint the cause.

I've never tried that oxygen treatment you described but when I think about it my guess is that yeah, that'd probably work very well as long as I did it before the migraine went too far. Mostly though I can keep 'em under control with a combination of the Isometh, Vicodin and....Pepsi!

The caffeine combined with something icy cold, being the point there. Icepacks on the back of my neck and foreheard help quite a bit too, if it really gets bad.

Thank you very much though for the oxygen treatment suggestion. No doctor's ever suggested that one to me and I've never heard of it before but it sounds like the best idea for knocking 'em down early, minus the use of medicines.

Peanut M and M's can and will go far.

I did the malted milk balls and ground them into some ice cream tonight, and it was OUTSTANDING. A good french ( yeah I know) Ice cream, and some chocolate malt balls...grinding sounds...good.

For my daughter, she wanted the combo-grind. Got the ice cream going, added the malted milk balls, and then the Snickers, which was cut up in small sections. Odd souds from the blender, but it burped out some good shit. The kid said it was choice. I guess that means it was good.

My boy wanted less nuts, but more diversity. Several scoops of French Vanilla, lop off a chunk or two of some dark chocolate, a handful of some hammer crunched blue diamond almonds, and a handful of some MMB (malted milk balls) ...slowly blended with some cream and some Hershey chocolate....TO DIE FOR.

I need a napkin.

Luthski.. I think I know what you are looking for. There are two NICE grocery stores withing 3 miles of your buddys place. Ray's or Newport Market. They both make killer, wings, ribs, roast chicken, etc at their delis and have loads of other nice snack stuff. They'll even put together a few things for ya special if ya got time. You can go into these places and tell one of the folks what you want and they'll actually help you get it together, or at least tell you whats a hit lately.

I can also drum up a few good spots for take out snacks. there's a good bbq joint right across from ray's with some good eats to go.

I've had a few shindigs this summer at the castle, And I've scored big with home made tzatziki and pita, and these little panchetta bruchettas (I know ,ghey) but they kill.

I'd go for the takeout thing man, you don't want to have the apron on when the boys are all LMAOing and bwahahaha all over the place.

Luth, for a sweet salty mix, try wrapping strips of bacon around cocktail franks or sausages and bake those bad boys a 350 for about 10 - 15 minutes. A couple of times through the cooking, slather those suckers with maple syrup...trust me. They should come out crunchy outside, tender inside and the flavor mix kicks it.

Wash down with plenty of suds. :rock:
