Here's a recent article from "Reason" magazine on the issue of public monies and stadiums..

And another...

Actually, there's a whole bunch more there also.

Basically, the alleged arguments that government subsidies are "good business" for the municipalities they are in is a big fat fib. It's a case of business owners lying and the fans of sports teams lying to themselves (and their neighbors, whose pockets they are fleecing) to justify keeping a team in their area. If you want to keep your team in your area and use YOUR money to do it, fine. But I'd rather fans not insist that I subsidize their team owner's business with MY taxes. I love the Bills, but I was damned pissed that NYS monies went to Ralph Wilson for his stadium renovations. If it comes down to the Bills leaving if they don't get their extortion payoff....err....."stadium subsidies," then fuck 'em, let 'em go. My happiness doesn't revolve around whether some billionaire chooses to keep his team of millionaire athletes in my region.

In a sense, economics is guiding this phenomenon. Or at least, the law of supply and demand is. Simply put, there are more metro areas in the U.S. which are at least arguably capable of supporting a major-league sports team than there are major-league franchises in any given sport. So the owners essentially are able to hold their area hostage, and if that area doesn't pony up, they threaten to move the team elsewhere. Much like the proverbial dog licking his balls (back to the title of the thread, how do you like that?) they do it because they can.

The owners do it because they can. The politicians (who "should" know better), do it because they are afraid of their constituents wrath. It's nothing more than a bread and circus mentality that has nothing to do whatsoever with real economic benefits for the area.

Pure horseshit.

The Truman Sports Complex was originally funded in 1969 by a sales tax voted for by Jackson county voters.

The half billion dollar renovations and upgrades are now also being funded by a sales tax approved by, you guessed it, Jackson county voters.

This has nothing to do with owners holding an area hostage or politicians being afraid of their constituents wrath (though they damn sure should be). As difficult as this may be for you to understand comrade B, people want major sports teams and first class facilities for their city, and they're willing to pay for it. It's a quality of life issue, and people feel better about living in a city that has these amenities.

Are you FUCKING kidding me????????

:meds:

The ENTIRE media campaign behind the pro-stadium renovation tax honks revolved around "we could lose the Chiefs and Royals if this tax doesn't get passed"!!!! Oh, and let's not forget those teeny-weeny wittle promises they made about getting the MLB All-Star game and a Super Bowl here too....so you're GODDAMN RIGHT this has EVERYTHING to do with owners holding an area hostage or politicians being afraid of their constituents wrath, because that's EXACTLY what happned here, and sheep like yourself fell for the little song and dance hook, line, and sinker.

Shaddup, Paul.

You were the one swallowing KK's drivel saying we needed a downtown stadium, you friggin' idiot.

You were the one saying that downtown investment wasn't already 1 billion dollars. Guess what doofus, it's over 2 $Bil now.

Thankfully, you're not representative of the majority of Jackson county voters. If morons like you who perpetually have their heads stuck up their ass had their way, we'd be watching tractor pulls at the intersection of I-435 and I-70 right about now.

Shaddup.

STFU, Tax Wagon.

Morons like YOU got this fucking STUPID stadium tax passed, and now we get to sit back and watch David Glass and Clark Hunt do whatever the FUCK they want to with our tax money....again, thanks to sheep like yourself who were SOOOOOOO afraid of those teams moving away.

Dumping $300 million into Arrowhead Stadium and upwards of $275 million into The K is pretty much the STUPIDEST thing this county has ever done, PERIOD. We could've had NEW stadiums for those teams for around the same price tag, but that's too smart. :meds:

Your stupidity and ignorance is as alarming as it is amazing. Please tell me that you can't vote. Please tell me that you don't have a drivers license. Please hitchhike your ass to Omaha or Wichita.

Dave,

You might want to look at some numbers before you dismiss Paul out of hand. For two open air stadiums, he's right that they could have been built for roughly what it's costing Jackson County to refurbish your old stadiums.

If your elected officials really cared about you, they would have told the Chiefs and Royals management to build their own damn stadiums and never put the sales tax on the ballot. Not that I can blame them for being cowards. Outside of LA, I can't think of too many places with the balls to stand up to team owners when it comes to stadiums. My own home state is pouring billions into the new Yankee Stadium and New Jersey errr Brooklyn Nets project. And for what? So that NYC will have two MLB and two NBA teams? It's a fucking waste of money.
