As insane as it sounds, though - UGA may be scaring me even more than Alabama right now. Those motherfuckers are kicking total ASS right now. Up until a couple of years ago, the visitor usually won in that game, but UGA has recently won FOUR in a row against us. I'm just hoping that Gene & Co. will remember that. I've got a feeling we're gonna see a LOT of points in that one... I'm not too high on our chances of being undefeated going into Tuscaloosa. If we are, 'Bama will kick our asses.
With apologies to John Prine...

Dear Abby, Dear Abby,
Well I never guessed
That my dear old Auburn could be ranked the best
I'm picking against them, avoiding a jinx,
I'm still kind of worried what Lillian thinks.

Oh Willie, Oh Willie,
You have no complaint
You are what your are, that's a great giant taint,
So listen up tubby, and listen up good,
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood.

if msu gets past iowa then check out this gauntlet they have to run:

minnesota
purdue
@penn state

nick sheridan beat minnesota once and more players from purdue and penn state live in the icu than in student housing, not to mention psu didn't have any qbs to begin with.

well, no. msu is msu, after all. but aside from their secondary they're a complete team, and not like that matters much considering the lineup of qbs they have left to face after iowa.

So if they go 11-1 it'll be SOS despite the fact they'll have surpassed anybody's wildest expectations?

If they lose a game it'll be for the same reason 99% of cfb has lost some games - because it's kinda hard to go undefeated. Not because "msu is msu."

touchy, eh.

if they go 11-1 it'll be because they lost to iowa. msu is a good team. as far as msu being msu, tell me: if they get past iowa, how confident will you be, state fan and all, to just assume they'll run the table? that's an atrocious lineup of teams you have there, you know.

as far as sos, why don't we assume msu finishes undefeated. then why don't you go through their schedule and point out the quality wins. you can even add one to the total for "getting through any schedule undefeated is always difficult."

He's right, MSU IS MSU, and what MSU is, is a very good football team. I'm expecting a fucking bloodbath...brawl...or whatever you want to call smashmouth football on Saturday. I think it's going to be one hell of a game, and one that has a great deal of importance for both teams....more for MSU, obviously, in terms of BCS ranking, but both teams are still playing for at least a share of the Big Ten title. I'm hoping that this Saturday will help to erase the memory of last week's loss to Wisconsin.....as if I can ever forget when I post here and have to look at that damn Badger helmet.

Perhaps. I'm up to my crank in TPS reports, and want to fast forward to Saturday.

I don't care how bad PSU is, I won't be overly confident of a win in Happy Valley until it actually happens.

I haven't argued strength of schedule, but ok...

I've been on record around these parts as having a different standard for "quality of win." Partly because I'm a loser MSUFan and because I'm one of those suckers that really does think it's hard to win conference road games vs ________. Or at the very least, hard to win impressively. I was bracing for the Northwestern loss even before the 17 point deficit.

Michigan
Illinois
Northwestern
Wisconsin
Iowa

would all be quality wins in my eyes, ranging from impressive to just solid. Though that'll be better judged after the season.

i guess i'm the opposite in that i don't assume home field transforms a shite team to anything even approaching mediocre, or at least anything that a team like state shouldn't handle relatively easy in football terms. generally speaking, of course: there are obviously those games where the other team's sharp and you're flat.

msu will get due credit for going undefeated in a bcs conference but the total body of work just won't be overwhelmingly impressive. (i really only brought it up in response to the shit boise gets for their schedule.) but sos happens. i mean, michigan in 2006?

otherwise, i'm not a sparty hater, so i'm actually pulling for your boys to win the conference.

haha, nice try. get state into the mnc against oregon and i'm rocking my childhood romance.

rooting for state has more to do with seeing osu's dominance take at least a one-year break as well as a good deal of my friends having attended msu. we're not dickbags to each other about wins and losses, ergo i like to see them happy since i can't be.

No, it will probably be 17-14. Big games in football (pro or college) always seem to go opposite of what you would expect. There will probably be 18 turnovers and Oregon will win 17-14 on a last second field goal (after missing the previous 2 but getting another shot after Auburn was offsides on both tries). Cam Newton will have 7 turnovers but LeMichael James will fumble it right back in 5 of those.

more i hear about UO, i think of Oklahoma 03. a team that scored a billion points, got a ton of media love, but never had to play a meaningful 4th quarter and subsequently couldn't close the deal when it mattered against a good D. out-schemed by Snyder badly in the Big XII Championship and couldn't overcome a shaky start and a crucial pick 6 by Jason White to beat LSU in the Sugar Bowl. end of the Sugar Bowl was bad play-calling by Chuck Long. first and 10 on the LSU 12 down 7 with 3 minutes left....and Chuck abandons the run game that got him there. LSU was gassed. i was sitting in that end zone in the SuperDump and LSU's guys were bent over sucking air. Kejuan Jones is pulling 6+ yards a pop. all down the field. then, Chuck gets cute and outthinks himself with play-calling.

Now, the Ducks may be the greatest team ever.....but with the weak OOC and really only Stanford as a quality opponent thus far...hard to know.

Uh, wrong.

Running back Mario Fannin is Mr. Fumble and he has solidified his third string status because of it.

Will Auburn?

LSU didn't have a "real defense"? And here I was, thinking they were ranked near the top in defense, after playing some tough teams.

Oregon has Zona coming up, who are really the only defensive juggernaut in the PAC.

Although as crazy as it sounds, I'm sure Stanford fan will back me up -- Wazzu is pretty good on defense this year... their offense sucks so badly, they just keep giving the ball back immediately, but their D is actually fairly solid (but they have to defend against 15 possessions every game, so the stats won't tell the whole story).

Speaking of PAC10 "defenses" -- Oregon vs UDub should be quite a show -- since Washington has NO defense. Just awful on D. Look for one crazy boxscore in that one.

Let's analyze SECBSH's claim, shall we?

Oregon #1 in turnover ratio (by a wide margin, IIRC)

#12 in scoring defense.

#3(T) in interceptions.

#13 in yards-per-play allowed.

All while giving their opponents more possessions than any other team.

Yeah, they give up a whopping 3 more points a game than Bama, without the benefit of the "3 runs and a punt" offense that the SEC bottom feeders employ.
