Halladay was a horse with a capital H...but does a 203-105 career record simply usher one into the Hall? Yes, he was dominant in his era--always important for consideration--but if Doc Halladay goes in with 203, how does Jack Morris (256) remain in limbo?

Or maybe Halladay shouldn't have been flying his plane like he was the pilot on Ozzy's Diary of a Madman tour.

I just think that if you come upon a freshly wrecked plane in the water, it couldn't hurt to go for a swim and see if maybe the guy isn't dead yet.

Re: Roy Halladay gonner
I fish that area often and have seen Halladay flying in the area quite a few times recently. To say he was aggressive is an understatement, reckless is more like it. He constantly would skim the treetops on Anclote Island and perform these dive bomber type maneuvers where he would barely pull up 3-5 feet from the water. It was just a matter of time.

The NTSB report suggests dude was impaired.Horner was criticized for reusing passages from his earlier compositions, and for featuring brief excerpts and reworked themes from classical composers.[5] For example, his scores from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock include excerpts from Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky and Romeo and Juliet;[40][41] the famous action ostinato from Aliens is originally from Wolfen;[42] the heroic theme from Willow is based on that of Robert Schumann's Rhenish Symphony; and the climactic battle scene in Glory includes excerpts from Wagner and Orff.[43] Some critics felt these propensities made Horner's compositions inauthentic or unoriginal.[44][45][46] In a 1997 issue of Film Score Monthly, an editorial review of Titanic said Horner was "skilled in the adaptation of existing music into films with just enough variation to avoid legal troubles".[5]

I've had this discussion. While 203 wins isn't quite HoF material in and of itself, if you add in the perfect game, and the no-no in the playoffs, and a ton of complete game shutouts, he's right there.
But at this point, we probably shouldn't call him an "ace."

Rich enough to spend his days playing with toy airplanes.
Had a wife (prolly smoking hot) and young kids. And he punches out playing Maverick?
I'd say that was a shit way to go.
He could have continued to have fun for another 30-40 years, pounded the OL a few thousand times, watched his kids grow up, then killed himself driving to the grocery store like 80 year olds are supposed to.

First off let me say that you would never find me flying an aircraft in that way. Form what I understand he didn’t have an acrobatic license of any kind. Much less one that allowed such maneuvers at that low of an altitude. That said it sucks that he dies for his family and friends.
The video is no help to let us know much of anything helpful. Was the power plant operating as indicated? Was their any structural failures or damage? Either due to design flaws or his own actions?
My guess though the NTSB report will include pilot error when all is said and done.

I would say there was a fair bit of structural failure the moment he tried to make it a submarine.
It does suck for his family, but you gotta give props to Chuck D for taking Roy out of the park when he hung a curve ball.

Wha..!! C'mon, sure, some standard sampling of the greats, some shuffling of chords to keep the lawyers happy, and yes a fondness for Oxy as he flew about like one of those Avatar dragons, but jeez, goobs, no need to pillory the man as a weaselly thieving Jew who was also a junkie. Well sure. Dude had to hit the water pretty fast or with a decent nose down attitude to flip a float plane.

A search of FAA pilot registry shows several Halladays, and this is the closest to what I would think could be him. If so, fairly decently rated with that seaplane endorsement, and I would think he would know better. Lot of ratings crammed in a short period.Left Seater wrote:. Looking at the last part of the video before he augers in, he laid it on its side too low, lost all his lift and fell out of the sky, maybe a flat spin at 100 mph. Pretty squirrely plane for a lower horse power aircraft and he was flying it right to it's edge.

Are we discussing the roll axis? If so, maybe, maybe not.
However, with a mid engined plane it is unlikely that it inverted performance was great.

Here is another take on the aircraft. The video confirms that the pilot listing I put up is Roy Hallady. This many only interest the aviation types.
Putting it into context, I am currently looking for a Light Sport Aircraft class airplane, specifically an Aerona Champ 7AC or a Taylorcraft. They are in the same class, but way away from the Icon in performance, as well as price. While I could easily fly the Icon, it has no appeal to me because of price, and performance. Icon will take a lot of heat for the way they marketed this aircraft in the LSA market, a high performance airplane in a class of low time pilots and more docile aircraft.

Interesting video. That pilot sounded very knowledgable. Too bad his video production skills were so horrible.
One of the comments on it was spot on. This is similar to the Jap sport bike industry in that you are selling machines to very inexperienced people with promises they can do all the cool shit, just like on the marketing video. And you end up with plenty of them in the morgue.
This will likely be the end of Icon, but someone else will come along.
