I think that there are legitimate aspects to both answers. If Zion chooses to not play due to earning potential being at risk, that is valid. But that raises a question about his character and the importance of money versus his desire to win. By going out and playing he will do what he wants to do, which is play basketball, and give those teammates a better chance at the title— particularly since most of them will never step foot on a basketball court as a professional.

So from a strictly monetary standpoint, not playing is the smart move. But if he is the competitor that I suspect he is, it’ll stick in his craw for the rest of his days that he didn’t find out if they were good enough to win the championship. Furthermore, it may be his only shot to win a national championship, because once he goes pro, he’ll likely get stuck on a bad or mediocre team.

If he goes out and finishes the season on court, he’ll show everyone that he has the drive to win— which I think will pay off more in the long run with his future teammates on whatever pro team he lands on.
